Plan Now to Attend IMAPS ‘01 in Baltimoreand Be Charmed!
John Graves, IMAPS 2001 General Chair
It is mid-November as I write this. The leaves are off of the trees and the chill wind of Winter is just around the corner. However, I am still warmed by the good feelings from attending IMAPS ‘00 in Boston. When the IMAPS ‘01 Symposium Committee found out that we would be following our friends in the New England Chapter, we were greatly pleased. We figured, and rightly so, that a large part of our task would be done for us by their excellent lead. And so it was. Through their hard work and dedication, IMAPS ‘00 was a great success. Already, we have had many Exhibitors sign up for IMAPS ‘01. Many people have talked to us about presenting papers and Short Courses. It is our goal to build upon the success of IMAPS ‘00 and to delight you with IMAPS ‘01 in Baltimore.
The last time the Capital Chapter hosted the International Symposium was in 1989 in Baltimore. Were you there? The weather was beautiful all week, the facilities were excellent, and the turnout was tremendous. I have never met a single individual who was there who didn’t have a host of positive things to say about the show that year.
Since 1989, the Baltimore Convention Center has been re-born double the size that it was then. The Exhibition Hall floor is one large area with minimal obstructions and convenient loading areas for moving exhibits in and out. We have made sure that there are adequate facilities for the technical program in the Convention Center. In fact, the technical program will be held directly above the Exhibition Hall. These two show centers are separated only by the large escalators that separate the two floors. Clear signage will prominently mark the way for attendees to move from one center to the other.
We are also going to re-create the Plenary Session that was successfully used to kickoff IMAPS ‘89. This activity will allow us to set the technical tone of the show and will give us an appropriate venue to honor the IMAPS award winners for 2001.
Another show feature that contributed to a very large “walk in” attendance at IMAPS ‘89 was the conscious tailoring of the technical program to the regional audience. We’re going to do that again next year. In addition to our traditional offerings, we will be offering technical sessions and Professional Development Courses (PDCs) in the areas of electro-optics/photonics, RF/microwave, medical applications of microelectronics, MEMS/nanotechnology, and advanced electronics technology topics (such as lead-free solder, SMT, CSP, etc.).
You know, Boston is a charming city. Baltimore is a lot like Bostonits streets are just straighter!
So, come to IMAPS ‘01, enjoy the show and our beautiful Fall weather, and be charmed by Charm City!
