Virginia Governor Announces First Phase of 300mm Wafer Chip Plant
Governor Jim Gilmore has announced that Infineon Technologies of Richmond, VA, will expand its presence in the state and create 1,100 jobs by becoming the first semiconductor plant to commercially produce 300mm wafers on the East Coast. Governor Gilmore approved a $3 million grant to assist Henrico County with site preparation. Virginia will also provide a $2 million education grant to increase the Commonwealth's semiconductor technology capacity at higher education institutions.
SMP Announces Issuance of Leading Patent
SuperiorMicroPowders, LLC (SMP), has been issued a U.S. Patent pertaining to advanced luminescent materials. The patent, US 6,153,123, is the first of many SMP patents to be issued regarding advanced display materials. This first patent offers broad intellectual property coverage on sulfide-based phosphor compositions.
FERRO Acquires EMCA-REMEX
Ferro has announced that it has acquired EMCA-Remex from National Starch and Chemical Company. "...This latest acquisition nicely complements our existing product line and is another step toward our goal-building a core business in this area," stated Hector R. Ortino, Chairman and CEO of Ferro.
Newbury and Phillips Join QUAD
Quad Systems has named Philip Newbury Business Development Manager and Ronald Phillips Regional Service Manager.
Newbury holds a B.S in Industrial Engineering and Operations Management from Purdue University and a M.S. in Business Administration from DePaul. He is an advisory board member of Neovsix. Prior to joining Quad, he served as president of PTI, Inc., and was a Vice President with DiiGroup.
Phillips joined Quad in 1993 as a Senior Field Service Engineer. He previously served as a Manufacturing Engineer with Lorain Products. He holds a B.S. in Electronic Technology from Cleveland State and is a member of the Surface Mount Technology Association.
ADVANCED CERAMICS Expands with New $12 Million Addition
Advanced Ceramics is beginning a $12 million addition to its headquarters building which will more than double the size. The new addition will increase the company's square footage from 135,000 to 300,000 square feet.
ASYMTEK Participates in No-Flow Underfill Technology Study
Asymtek and the Rochester Institute of Technology have entered into joint research on the material-machine interactions of commercially available no-flow underfill materials. This is a new project in a series of ongoing efforts with RIT and will help to define the future role of material jetting of no-flow underfill materials.
Campbell Joins SSEC
Solid State Equipment Co. has appointed Donald Campbell to the newly created position Director, Customer Satisfaction. Campbell comes to SSEC with more that 18 years experience in technical sales and management. He was also a National Account Manager with IBM. Campbell holds a M.S. in Mathematics and has done advanced study at the Wharton School of Business Management.

INCEP Technologies announ-ces the addition of Dr. Carl Hoge as Senior IC Packaging Architect. Dr. Hoge brings over 21 years of experience in the semiconductor industry in a wide variety of areas including semiconductor interconnect, IC package materials and development, wafer processing, and reliability analysis.
