Expanding IMAPS Europe in Practice
As the diligent reader of Advancing Microelectronics has found, the formation of IMAPS Russia took place last autumn. In June the organizers there held their first IMAPS Russia Workshop in the well-known high-tech center, MIET, in Zelenograd. Better yet, they invited IMAPS’s top management from North America and Europe to both participate in the technical program and to have a round table discussion on IMAPS in general and IMAPS Russia in particular. The welcome and hospitality we received were outstanding. Moscow is a colorful capital and we saw the brightest part of it.

The technical program was very comprehensive; research from different R & D centers throughout Russia was presented. Their deep knowledge of crystallographic and material sciences attracted our interest. However, our understanding is that the industrial utilization of microelectronics and packaging is at the moment pretty limited. IMAPS Russia will play a significant role getting their industry and research organizations to meet each other as well as other domestic and international companies. IMAPS, as a society, will provide the forum for them to extend the visibility of the Russian technology to the rest of the world.

The Round Table discussion on IMAPS and its expansion included well-prepared presentations by IMAPS Russia President, Rector Yuri Chaplygin, IMAPS NA President Greg Caswell, Russian Chapter Board Members Alexander Taran and Igor Vernier. In addition to cross-participation in IMAPS conferences, the Russians are interested in getting publications from the rest of the world and to publish internationally.
All English presentations were translated to Russian and the foreign visitors got a simultaneous translation to English of the papers given in Russian. This process was effective but, in the future it may be easier to arrange separate sessions in Russian with a few bilingual ones.

It looks like the role of IMAPS Russia is at least dual: Network the microelectronics and packaging activities in this enormous land and help the people there reach out internationally. Both of these roles were well initiated in this first ever IMAPS Russia workshop.
We wish the organizers a fruitful continuation of the well started work!
