Over 150 people attended the IMAPS ATW (Advanced Technology Workshop) on “Optoelectronics Packaging” held in Bethlehem, PA, October 11-14th. John Pittman, VP of Manufacturing for Agere Systems delivered the keynote talk, “The Rise and Fall of the Photon.” John enlightened the audience with his unique insights into the cyclic nature of the optoelectronics packaging business. One highlight of the workshop was the “New Kids in Town” evening session, which featured local start-ups, and emerging opto players expressing their views on challenges for the optoelectronics packaging community. There were five other technical sessions on various aspects of optoelectronics packaging, including fiber alignment and attachment, packaging assembly and materials. Lehigh University hosted a student poster competition and a special Saturday evening session focused on Educators in Optoelectonics. The local IMAPS Keystone chapter helped sponsored the event and organized tours of the local historical area.
Besides a hard copy of the final abstracts each attendee received a textbook on Optoelectronics Packaging and a CD filled with the latest papers and presentations. Based on attendee feedback the event was an overwhelming success! Plans are in the works to expand the venue and hold it again next year at the Hotel Bethlehem during the same time frame. Check the IMAPS website for updated program plans and information.
